Task 4: Investigate the mathematics of a theme park ride, playground ride or toy. Your task is to convince your Principal to buy this ride/toy based on its mathematical concepts.
Dear Mr. Boreham
Many teachers and students have found educational ways of using Minecraft in the classroom to demonstrate Maths concepts. For example Merrylands Science Teacher, Ms. Alice Leung gave her students the task of recreating The Parthenon, which proves the Golden Ratio, which is 1:1.6 .
As part of a project I did last year, I constructed a 3D Model of a town. This involved working with patterns, symmetry and ratio.
Here is part of my clip, which is a reconstruction of The Globe Theatre, and also the clip from Merrylands High of The Parthenon:

Canley Vale High Minecraft Project
Here is a proposal used by Mr. Laurens Derks, a Senior Project Officer with the DEC, to incorporate Minecraft into Maths and Science classes. The students have been using MinecraftEDU this year and have found it very engaging and useful:
There are many other mathematical concepts we could explore using Minecraft, such as measurement and shape. Ms. Alice Leung did a study which showed that student engagement also improved a lot more using Minecraft Projects.
Minecraft has many other educational uses, not only in Maths, but also History, English, Geography and Design and Technology. Minecraft is built for creation and your imagination. Players need to problem solve constantly to mine for the materials needed for their creations and work out how much they will need of different resources. I believe Portland School students would benefit by having Minecraft in their classes and would be more interested in learning and cooperating.
Finally, below is an explanation of MinecraftEDU in the classroom by it's developer, Joel Levin:
Yours truly
Jayker
