Task 4: Investigate the mathematics of a theme park ride, playground ride or toy. Your task is to convince your Principal to buy this ride/toy based on its mathematical concepts.
Dear Mr. Boreham
I am writing a letter to convince you to buy Minecraft for our school because it has mathematical concepts. There are lots of ways we could use Minecraft for Maths, and other great things about the game. For example, here is an example of how one teacher's Year 8 class recreated ancient Greek buildings in Minecraft. This is a project combining Measurement, History, Research, Design and problem solving skills:

Minecraft is also good for students with Special Needs. Here is an article about how Minecraft helped student with Aspergers to read and write:

Aspergers is a condition which often creates difficulties with communication with others and abnormally high levels of concentration, which can lead to being anti-social. In this article, a mother talks about her son and Minecraft. She says playing Minecraft he is confident and will try anything, making him feel good. He makes friends and is more social. He feels included and also learns how to deal with defeat.
It helped him with his reading and writing because he was highly motivated to read instructions and recipes for items. He also has to type to talk to other players and create signs in game. He has also had to learn to research online, using blogs, wikis and YouTube not to mention the constant use of Google. She found that his increased communication skills transferred to real life.
Ms. Kate Booth, at Coffs Harbour Public School, has been using Minecraft in her school. http://coffsharbourpublicschool.edublogs.org/minecraft/
Thank you for reading my letter Mr. Boreham.
Yours truly
